Have you ever noticed that when you’re stressed, you can’t sit still? You might find yourself tapping your foot, pacing the floor, or fidgeting with a pen. We often mistake this for simple restlessness, but it’s actually a profound biological signal. Your body is trying to “find the beat” to help you regulate.
In a recent conversation with Lavinia Plonka, a renowned movement expert, we explored the fascinating link between rhythm, movement, and our ability to survive and thrive. In the Somatic ReThink system, we understand that this isn’t just a quirk of human behavior—it’s an ancient, biological survival mechanism.
The Wisdom of the Rhythm
Consider the animal kingdom for a moment. When a rabbit is frightened, it doesn’t just sit in place and try to “think” its way out of fear. It stomps its feet against the ground. Similarly, when a deer encounters a threat, it may stomp rhythmically to communicate and process the nervous energy coursing through its body.
This isn’t just communication; it is a way to take overwhelming nervous energy and apply it in a constructive, regulated way. Humans have done this for millennia. Whether through drumming, dancing, or rhythmic stomping, we have used rhythm to connect with ourselves and propitiate the earth. When you engage in rhythmic movement, that vibration reverberates through your bones and cells, signaling to your nervous system that you are reclaiming control.
The Nervous System Gap: Why “Thinking” Isn’t Enough
We often try to solve our stress through analysis. We sit down, we ruminate, and we try to “figure out” why we are stressed. But the Nervous System Gap is the reality that when your system is in overdrive, your thinking brain is often the last thing to come back online.
You can’t “think” your way into a relaxed state if your nervous system is trapped in a fight-or-flight pattern. Your body is stuck in a jagged, chaotic rhythm, and you need a physical input to interrupt that cycle. If you rely solely on your mind to “calm down,” you remain locked in the loop. You need to provide your body with a new rhythm—a signal of safety—to bring your system back to equilibrium.
This is the foundation of the Somatic ReThink system: we use intentional, rhythmic movement to bypass the thinking mind and speak the language the nervous system actually understands.
The Somatic ReThink: A Guided Walkthrough
The following practice helps you discharge “stuck” nervous energy and reset your internal state using the power of rhythm.
Part 1: The Somatic Exercise (The Rhythmic Reset)
This practice is designed to mimic the body’s natural response to stress, providing a safe “container” for that energy to be released.
- Find Your Ground: Stand with your feet hip-width apart. Feel the weight of your body pressing into the floor.
- The Rhythmic Pulse: Begin to gently bounce on your heels. You don’t need to lift your feet; just create a rhythmic pulse through your whole body.
- The Stomp: If you feel “stuck” or overwhelmed, add a gentle rhythmic stomp. Pick up your foot and place it down with intentionality. Thump, thump, thump. Find a rhythm that feels supportive to you. As you do this, feel the vibration move up through your bones.
- Listen to the System: Continue for 60 seconds. Notice how your breathing naturally starts to change as your system relaxes. You are signaling to your nervous system: “I am here, I am grounded, and I am in control of my rhythm.”
Part 2: The ReThink Exercise (Updating Your “Contract”)
Once you have physically discharged the energy, use this ReThink process to update your narrative.
- The Old Thought: Identify the story that accompanies your stress. (Example: “I am overwhelmed, and I have to keep running to keep up.”) This is the “Old Thought”—the belief that you are at the mercy of your nervous energy.
- The New Reality: Now, ReThink this based on the work of the Somatic ReThink system. Write your New Reality: (“I am not my nervous energy. I am the conductor of my own rhythm. I have the power to stop, reset, and return to equilibrium whenever I choose.”)
